group of past and continuing students of the Kwame Nkrumah University
of Science and Technology (KNUST) are set to petition President John
Dramani Mahama and some key state actors over the 10-year jail term
handed down to a student of the university.
The convict, Kennedy Nana Yaw Abrokwa, a 3rd year Chemistry student, was jailed by a Kumasi Circuit Court presided over by Mrs Mary Nsenkyire on Thursday March 31, to a decade in prison with hard labour, for robbing a fellow student.
The group, in a statement, noted that the embattled student, was overwhelmed with a series of challenges ranging from financial constraints, family neglect, despair, and depression, which might have landed him in the unfortunate act.
The leader of the group, Sheriff Alhassan Asiedu Ampem, a Chemistry graduate, who is currently doing national service at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) told Class News in an interview on Thursday 7 April that his colleague, who is currently in prison, is a brilliant student, who had to drop out of school, presumably due to financial difficulties when they were in the second year.
According to him, he was, however, re-admitted with the help of a lecturer, but financial difficulties have taken a toll on the gentleman leading to some psychological challenges.
They are, however, pleading and asking for the intervention of the president to grant him presidential pardon.
