‘Wee Smoking’ Healthier than Cigarette-KATH Doctors

Resident Family Doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi, Dr. Kennedy Korankye and Dr. Nana Kofi Edu Affare have revealed that the consumption of  cannabis is somewhat healthier than tobacco.
They indicate that persons who consume cannabis otherwise known as Indian hemp are not prone to diabetics as compared to those who smoke tobacco taking into account the amount of carcinogens contained in them.
According to the two health experts , weed has medicinal values and in some cases used in pain management as compared to tobacco which has about 16 cancer causing agents.
Speaking on the Ultimate Breakfast Show hosted by Lantam Papanko, they warned that the psychological effect of cannabis makes it dangerous to consumers despite its health benefits.

“People, who take cannabis, will gradually graduate into taking other narcotic agents. Consequently most of them end up in the psychiatric hospitals. Some of them smoke it because it rewards the brain that causes happiness and a particular euphoria    ”, they explained.
They warned that smoking generally is a dangerous phenomenon because certain chemicals are released causing gaseous exchange which cumulatively affects all organs in the body of the smoker.
Cohort effects, addictive effects and peer pressure they emphasized coupled with well packaged advertisements from tobacco companies is believed to have pushed many into smoking.
The claim that smoking of either weed or tobacco keeps the smokers  more relaxed, calm their  nerves, make them sleep better and  manage their  weight are all myths because which cannot be medically proven.

“Electricity More Expensive Than Rent Under Mahama” – Akufo-Addo

The 2016 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has noted that the economic situation in the country continues to worsen under the government of President Mahama, to the extent that the cost of electricity per month for ordinary Ghanaians is now more expensive than the rent charged per month.
So bad is the situation that, according to the NPP flagbearer, Ghanaians are now undergoing a self-imposed load shedding programme as a result of the unbearable utility tariffs imposed on the Mahama government, caused by 8 years of economic mismanagement.
“Can you believe that today in Ghana, for the ordinary Ghanaian, the cost of electricity is more than the cost of their rent? So forget even ‘dumsor’, it is now ‘yÉ›nsor’, because you can’t afford to pay. That is where we are,” he lamented.
Inaugurating the South African branch of the NPP on Saturday, May 7, 2016, at Illovo in Johannesburg, Nana Akufo-Addo stated that Ghana has been on the decline ever since the NPP administration headed by President Kufuor left office in January 2009, evident in the country’s growth rates then and now.
According to Nana Akufo-Addo, at the end of President Kufuor’s tenure, Ghana was growing at a rate of 8.4%, without the benefit of oil. However, with oil revenues coming on stream, the Mahama government is growing Ghana at a rate of 3.9%.
“These are the stark facts, they are not inventions of Akufo-Addo or NPP. They are the official statistics of our country. If you want any indication of how bad the decline has been, these two statistics will tell you all you need to know,” he said.
Continuing, he added that “businesses are collapsing, unemployment is at the highest ever in our history, the NHIS has collapsed, and educational sector having great difficulties. Especially for those of us in political office or any prominent office, you have to run away from your house. The number of people who come to your house asking for school fees is mind-boggling, because it is no longer possible for ordinary people to bear the educational costs of their children. You just feel like crying that our country has gotten to this situation. That is how bad things have become.”
With government functionaries, apologists and propagandists quick to point to the so-called ‘global economic crunch’ and falling commodity prices as the reasons for the decline in growth of the economy and rising hardships, Nana Akufo-Addo was quick to point to the “boom” occurring in neighbouring Cote d’Ivoire – a country identical to Ghana in terms of geography, and though smaller in land size and population compared to Ghana.
Though Cote d’Ivoire in 2010 experienced civil war as a result of a disputed election, which led to the deaths of 3,000 people and displaced over 100,000 citizens, most of whom came to Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo explained that “[President Alassane] Ouattara’s leadership has been such that Cote d’Ivoire has been growing at 8% to 9% over the last five years. Whilst we have been going like this (declining), they are going like that (experiencing a boom).”
The NPP flagbearer was unequivocal about the fact that “it can’t continue like this for us in Ghana, because we have the resources, both the human and material resources, to do so much better for our country than what is going on now. And I, for one, and the overwhelming majority of Ghanaians are saying enough is enough. It is time for a change in Ghana.”

Age not a factor

With NDC communicators, for the lack of a convincing message, playing the age card in their hope to secure victory in the 2016 elections, Nana Akufo-Addo shot down these claims, stating that competence and the proven ability to deliver must be the watchwords for the Ghanaian electorate.
“Alassane Ouattara, who I am talking you about, in Cote d’Ivoire is two years older than me. Muhammadu Buhari is three years older than me, and you see what he is doing in Nigeria. The so-called young man that we have is plunging our country into a ditch. Let’s elect the so-called old man to come and take our country out of the ditch,” he said, much to the approval of the hundreds of NPP supporters gathered at the Wanderer’s Club, the venue for the inauguration, which was under the theme “To rid Ghana of incompetence and corruption”.
Describing 2016 as a critical year for Ghanaians, the NPP flagbearer urged all party members to put their shoulders to the wheel and help push the elephant into the Jubilee House.
“That is the task ahead of us. We cannot allow it to be said by our children and grandchildren that at the time when it was necessary to rescue our country, our generation failed the task. We can’t do that. Let this be the generation that saved Ghana, so that, one day, when the history books are being written they will say ‘it was in our grandparents’ time, when Akufo-Addo was president, that we changed the fortunes of our country’”, he said.
Present at the event were NPP MP for Oforikrom, Hon. Elizabeth Agyemang; NPP Director of International Relations, Charles Owiredu; NPP South Africa branch Chairman, Kwaku Odame; NPP South Africa branch vice Chairman, Professor Amoateng; founding member of the NPP South Africa branch, Mr. Enoch Peprah; Political Assistant to Nana Akufo-Addo, Francis Asenso Boakye; and Press Secretary to Nana Akufo-Addo, Eugene Arhin, and hundreds of Ghanaians, amongst others.

Minority Leader’s Letter pops up at Sammy Crabbe’s Trial

The case of suspended Second National Vice Chairman of New Patriotic Party (NPP) Sammy Crabbe at an Accra Human Rights Court on Tuesday sprang several surprises.
A letter purportedly written by   Minority Leader Osei Kyei- Mensah-Bonsu appointing the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tarkwa Nsuem, Madam Eugenia Kusi onto the National Disciplinary Committee of the party became a matter of contention.
The Principal witness, Paul Awentami Afoko took his seat in court at around 11 am to answer questions relating to the legality in relation to the appointment of Madam Eugenia Kusi onto the Disciplinary Committee of the party.
Mr. Afoko who is seeking for proper interpretation of his party’s constitution in another court, in answering a question posed to him by counsel for the defendants Godfred Dame, explained that, the Disciplinary Committee of the party is a subcommittee to the National Council of which he happens to be the convener and chairman. He disclosed he is conversant with the party’s structure and in reading out the constitutional provisions of the party with respect to how appointments are done on Disciplinary Committee explained “Article 4″ of the party’s Constitution which stipulates that “One REPRESENTATIVE from parliament” has to be presented to the National Council for appointment and approval and not Parliament making appointment of members to the Disciplinary Committee
When given two separate letters to identify its authenticity, Mr.  Afoko told the court that, the purported letter written by W.O Boafo was without date or any trace likely to be identified as a date. However, in minority leader’s letter which is supposed to be an appointment letter of Hon Eugenia Kusi,  Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu strangely manufactured “1st October 2015” as the date for the purported letter from W.O Boafo, according to witness .
He indicated that not  only  was the date  wrong and false, the suspended  National Chairman explained with respect to the constitution that, it is only the National Council which receives “representative” member of Parliament and thereafter makes appointment and approval of such “representative” member from parliament to sit on the Disciplinary Committee which is a subcommittee of the National Council.
The two-hour cross-examination of NPP’s lead counsel  Godfred Dame came to a close with the witness giving a vivid account of  how he was appointed o to the National Council (NC) representing the  Upper East (UE) region  for four years per the then convention.

EC does not have to consult NPP all the time – Samuel Ofosu Ampofo

In a post-mortem analysis of the Limited Biometric Registration Exercise, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has observed that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has an unrealistic expectation to be consulted by the Electronic Commission (EC) before it takes a decision.
Director of Elections, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo explained that the NPP is misconstruing the need to be informed with the need to be consulted.
“You cannot expect the Electoral Commission when taking every decision to consult…it is about information, not consultation,” he said on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show Tuesday.
Samuel Ampofo was making his observations on the Limited Biometric Voter Registration exercise which ended last Sunday.
He expressed disappointment in the security services for failing to deal decisively with pockets of violence witnessed during the exercise.
Picking out an example of aggressive behavior by the NPP, Samuel Ampofo said at Sege in the Ada West District of the Greater Accra Region, the opposition party resisted plans by the EC to deploy equipment for registration.
The EC had planned to return to Sege Presby Primary polling centre to undertake the voters registration exercise, but some residents believed that the EC’s decision could be a plan to re-register people who have already been registered.
Samuel Ofosu Ampofo condemned the attitude of the NPP at Sege. But NPP Director of Elections explained his party’s resistance saying it was not consulted by the EC.
But NDC’s Samuel Ofosu Ampofo explained that the NPP’s misunderstanding of the role of political parties is the cause of this conflict.
He used an instance at the University of Ghana, where extra registration kits were needed to speed up the process.
According to Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, the EC did not consult the governing party when it decided to create additional registration centers there.
But the EC provided information to political parties, he said. For the NDC, once it was informed that two more centers had been opened up at the University of Ghana, it deployed its party agents to monitor the center.
“I do not think that the EC consulted us when they were sending two extra kits to Legon…. But the exigencies of the time [demanded that they send more kits]…they are managing the elections”, he said.
Mr. Ampofo noted that the Electoral Commission as an independent body is free to use its own discretion, to take steps to achieve its objectives.
Samuel Ofosu Ampofo indicated that the NPP did not accuse the EC of failing to consult the party when it opened up the extra centers at the University campus.
