Fifty (50) Landlords within the Wa Municipality in the Upper West Region face prosecution for failing to provide household toilet facilities for tenants in their homes.
The landlords could be slapped with hefty fines and in some cases handed prison terms if found guilty of flouting the country’s sanitation laws according to officials of the Wa Municipal Assembly.
The latest action by the assembly is aimed at curbing the increasing spate of open defection that has engulfed various suburbs within the city with concerns raised by authorities over its health implications.
Mr. Issahaku Nuhu Putiaha the Chief Municipal Executive (MCE), who disclosed this during the launch of the 10th anniversary celebrations of Zoomlion Ghana, indicated that the assembly is committed to ensuring that sanitation in the area is taken seriously.
He therefore warned that his outfit will not hesitate to deal with people who flout any law on sanitation in the area explaining that it is in the interest of the residents themselves he is taking such drastic measures.
On the National Sanitation Day, Mr. Putiaha revealed that the assembly may resort to the use of minimal force as people are beginning to relax during the exercise.
“As a means of ensuring that refuse dumping sites in the municipality are kept clean, the assembly has introduced the pay-as-you-dump policy. The pay-as-you-dump policy will help us pay people to ensure that our dumping sites are kept clean. We have introduced it at Kpaguri Tuonuni and the result is encouraging”, he explained.
The MCE thanked Zoomlion Ghana for partnering with the assembly to keep the area clean. He praised them for picking 40 refuse containers instead of the 30 agreed with the assembly.
